All technological progress is the result of thought. Had they not been born with the inherent ability to think, humans wouldn’t have created anything. By creating wonderful instruments, we began to attach more importance to our creations than the thought behind them.
The work of his hands has become the measure of civilization, whereas the ability to think, not the thing he creates, makes one individual more civilized than the other. Not applying thought in the process of utilizing his creation makes the individual dangerous and primitive. Creation becomes a threat to existence.
With a rifle, there is no limit to the amount and sort of animals a person can hunt. The person with a gun needs to apply more thought in choosing which creatures he’s going to kill and the number.
Before he had a gun, his choices were limited. Making choices requires thought, and creation expands the options and places a responsibility on humans to think more carefully.
Just when we think we are progressing towards a kinder and more loving world, someone thoughtlessly let's loose a torrent of killing, and he believes he’s demonstrated that he's civilized.
The Hamas attack of October 7th, the holocaust, and countless other atrocities in the course of history are examples of technology in the hands of savages who think that they are civilized.
Primitiveness and savagery continue to plague our world.
Thinking is a characteristic of civilized man. Savages don’t exercise thought; they want to be considered civilized, but they confuse what they've made as a sign of civilization.
The more they create, the more modern they consider themselves. They learn this from truly progressive people. They see a man make a table, and they think that’s civilization. “I’ll also make a table and make it better. He sees a chair and other objects that civilized man creates.
For civilized man, creating those objects is not a defining characteristic. The application of thought, which lies behind the object created, makes him civilized.
With this idea in his mind, the savage gleefully creates. He has hands, eyes, and fingers. He can make and break, and he considers himself civilized.
He appreciates the civilized man's skill in crafting technological accessories, tools, a toothbrush, and a machine to smooth tables, as opposed to the unwieldy plane.
He proceeds further and further, achieving technological objectives. His whole objective develops into a desire to become more technological than other people.
He’s delighted that he does things better and considers himself more civilized. Technology becomes the measure of civilization.
Eventually, he can destroy those he considers more civilized than himself. The result is catastrophic.
